Best News Ever

Thanks so much for taking the time to discover the “Best News Ever.” This news is found in the Bible and is called “The Gospel” or “Good News.” I want to share with you 4 verses from the Bible that summarize the best news you have ever heard.

First, The Bad News

Before we can appreciate the good news, we have to begin at the beginning of the story and look at some very bad news. The Bible tells us that we all have a HUGE problem.

Romans 3:23 (NLT)
For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.

We all share something in common. The Bible says that we are all sinners. What’s a sinner? Let me ask you, have you ever taken a shot at a target and missed the bulls-eye? That’s what sin is. The Bible tells us that our lies, our hate, our lust, our gossip, all the behaviors we do that God is not capable of doing, are a form of us missing the target of God’s requirement of perfection.

Now you might get closer to the bulls-eye than I would, but this verse is telling us that we all fall short of God’s standard of perfection.

Hold on to your seat, though! The bad news is about to get much worse. Here’s the next verse from the Bible I want to share with you.

Romans 6:23 (NLT)
…the wages of sin is death

We are all familiar with wages, aren’t we? We earn wages in exchange for work that we have done. Well, our work of sin has given us some wages. This verse makes it clear that our payment for our sin is death! Death always means separation. In this case, the payment for our work of sin is separation from God. Can you imagine what it would be like to be eternally separated from God? How horrible!

Because of your sin, there is a great gulf between you and God. It’s like being in a car that is headed for a cliff and you have no way of changing the direction of the car or preventing yourself from crashing on the rocks below!

Some people try all sorts of things to cover over their sin, thinking it will stop the car from going off the cliff. Some try to apply the “brakes” of church attendance, while others think that doing good deeds will stop the inevitable crash ahead. None of this can cure our sin problem. The Bible makes it clear that we cannot stick our foot out the door and stop the car of our life from going off the cliff of eternal separation from God. We cannot fix our problem that sin has caused.

So because there is no way we can fix our problem, God stepped in and offered us the only solution to our problem!

Now The Best News Ever!

Here is the 3rd verse I want to share with you.

Romans 5:8 (NLT)
But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.

Look at what God has done for us! When we could do nothing to stop the car of our lives from crashing off the cliff, God sent His Son, Jesus Christ to die in our place. To continue the analogy of the car crash, it’s as if Jesus rushed up to our crashing car, jerked us out of the vehicle and took our place behind the wheel!

You see, the Bible tells us that when Jesus died on the cross and shed His blood for us, He took our place and received the wages that we deserved – the wages of death. He died for us and suffered separation from God the Father because of your sin and my sin. That is what caused Him to cry out on the cross, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”

The Bible tells us that they took Jesus and laid Him in a tomb. But He did not stay dead! He came back to life again, showing that God the Father accepted God the Son’s death as payment in full for our sin!

But the “Best News Ever” gets even better! Here’s the 4th verse from the Bible I want to share with you.

Ephesians 2:8–9 (NLT)
God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.

Notice that first sentence. God is the subject of the sentence. He is the one doing the action. The Apostle Paul is saying to the people in the church in Ephesus that they had nothing to do with their salvation. God saved them by His grace.

Now notice the end of the first sentence. There you will see the one condition for receiving God’s gift of salvation. “When you believed,” tells us that the only requirement for making this gift personal is to believe! Can you believe it?! If you will simply believe what God has done for you, you can take advantage of the gift God is offering to you. By believing, you will be saved from that horrible separation from God that you deserve because of your sin! That is the BEST NEWS EVER!

Now You Have A Decision to Make

Think carefully about what I have just explained. Have you ever had a personal conversation with Jesus and said to Him, “I want to take your deal.” The Bible calls this “accepting” or “receiving” God’s gift.

Think back to your last birthday. Did anyone give you a gift? There it was, sitting on the table. It had your name on it, but it did not become your gift until you reached out and received it. The same is true of the gift of eternal life. It is being offered to you, but you have to reach out and make it yours.

So how do you do that? One of the most common ways to accept Jesus’ gift of salvation is to talk to Him and tell Him that you will take His deal. When we talk to Jesus, it is called prayer. Here is an example of what you could tell Jesus:

Jesus, I know I am a sinner and that the wages for my sin is death. I deserve to be separated from You, forever. But today I am taking Your deal. You died in my place and rose again from the grave. I am trusting You alone for my salvation. Thank you for taking my place and suffering for my sin. Thank You for the forgiveness and everlasting life I now have because of Your gift. Amen.

What Just Happened?

Let me share with you how Jesus explains what just happened. This is something he shared with a crowd of people one day:

John 5:24 (NLT)
I tell you the truth, those who listen to my message and believe in God who sent me have eternal life. They will never be condemned for their sins, but they have already passed from death into life.

Here is some more BEST NEWS EVER! When you received God’s gift of Salvation, Jesus says that you already have eternal life! It’s a done deal! You will NEVER be condemned for your sin. You ALREADY have passed from death into life.
